These games may feel tropey, but these games are the ones that invented a lot of the tropes you see in JRPGs, such as "villain burned down your village to force MC to leave", "Villain is actually a sad boi who was abused growing up", "But Thou Must!!", and everything in between. Those are my absolute favorites and are worth your time if you enjoy JRPGs. If you want better graphics, 1+2 are on Switch, and a Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD, similar to Octopath graphics, is in the works as well! If you want a popcorn game that's easy to consume, short, and "turn your brain off" goodness, Dragon Quests 1-3 are very fun, and very cheap on Mobile. Even then he feels like he is part of the story, and the beautiful expressions make the silent protagonist still feel like a character, something that really has only been done as well since like, Chrono Trigger. It really does have something for everyone, while still maintaining that "Dragon Quest, Retro Feel", such as keeping the main character silent. I have yet to find a person who didn't enjoy a lot about it, even if there were points that some people didn't enjoy too much.

Either try to get it on the PS2 (if you like prettier music) or 3DS (if you like QoL improvements).ĭragon Quest 11 is available on PC and just about anywhere, and it is by far one of the most interesting and fun Dragon Quest games in the entire series. Do NOT get the Mobile version, as they have removed the voiced lines. There is a part during the game where the main plot drives itself to a screeching halt and feels really annoying, but the 4 main characters are part of the group for the entirety of it, so they grow to become a much closer tight-knit group, similar to the FF5 characters. Dragon Quest 5 DS is fine.Īnother fun one that people tend to enjoy is Dragon Quest 8. The only problem with Dragon Quest 4 DS is that the Party Chat feature was removed only for the DS version and only for Dragon Quest 4. You can get them as a Mobile Port, and they work, but the DS versions might be a little more fun to play with, if you don't mind searching them out. My absolute favorite ones are Dragon Quests 4 and 5, 100%.

There are QoL improvements in 2 that may make it hard to go back to 1, and there are one or two easter eggs that are like "yoooo remember when this happened in the first one? HUHHHHH?" but nothing that would make an entire story/cutscene incomprehensible. People have said it before but no, you don't have to play 1 to play 2. It feels a little barren if you're a person who focuses on story, like me. The game implies that your characters are doing their story on their own, without others to join with them. There's no like, slow character development of the cast becoming more of a family like in FF5.

If you played many JRPGs in the past I think this is a pro to you.Īlso it has Jobs, so if you liked making a character strong through Jobs in FF5 or FFTactics then you know what you're getting into right there.īasically Final Fantasy is becoming an Action RPG game style, and if you don't want to go to Dragon Quest (Please go to Dragon Quest, I love that series too) then this is the best way to get that retro RPG fix.Ĭons: Honestly, the game can kinda drag on a little, and the characters don't interact with each other enough.

Maybe less six, because that was super steampunk compared, but you get the idea. Pros: It's like the oldenday RPGs, like FFs 1-6.

I am on this reddit only to trawl the boards and tell people not to play it because it's very bad.
